The first step towards becoming a security professional should be quite obvious, complete your training. Training is critical when it comes to security, the work that you will undertake could directly impact that safety of others, so there are no corners to be cut when it comes to training. Enrol in a training course, but first be sure that the training course that you take is approved. Once you’ve completed the full training, apply for your provincial security license. This is a requirement for all guards in BC. Be sure to take your training to heart, really get to know the subject matter and take it seriously, you’ll need to use this information in the field. The more you know, the more capable you will be of responding to the security threats that you will face.

Once you’ve completed your basic training and have obtained a license, it’s highly recommended that you continue to learn and develop new skills that will be beneficial to your future as a licensed security professional. Look into additional certifications, training programs and workshops. As a security guard, it can be very valuable to have additional skills and certifications that will be beneficial within the security field.

Sometimes, doing a job well takes more than just good training or extensive certification. To be a good security guard requires that you go above and beyond. Always take initiative and demonstrate that you are willing and able to do what is necessary in order to prioritize the safety, security and wellbeing of the client, store, building or individuals that you have been tasked with keeping secure. Possessing good character is an important part of the security industry. A good security guard is attentive, observant, calm, fair and able to take initiative. The ability to effectively problem solve and exercise good judgement is also critical.
