We All Have a Role to Play in Indigenous Reconciliation

Blackbird Security operates on the unceded territories of Western Canada’s diverse Indigenous peoples. We acknowledge our traditional hosts and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on their lands.

As a business, we are strongly committed to improving Indigenous inclusion and awareness in our day-to-day operations. Our industry has a complicated history and relationship with Indigenous peoples. We recognize our responsibility to work toward rebuilding trust and creating successful mutual relationships going forward. Talk is cheap, so we’ve taken the following practical steps toward fulfilling our responsibility.

Indigenous Awareness Training

Blackbird Security requires all our District Managers to obtain the 201 Indigenous Awareness Certification issued by Indigenous Awareness Canada. We have chosen to work with IAC because they are seen as the gold standard for training certification by the CCAB (Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business) and their program is used by the likes of CIBC, Shell, Parks Canada and the Calgary Police Service.

We are excited our valued team members can learn first-hand from Indigenous leaders in the community and implement their teachings into the training and onboarding of all Blackbird Security staff. Content covered in the Indigenous Awareness Certification includes:

  • Historical Introduction
  • Myths & Misconceptions
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Residential Schools
  • Chronology
  • Current Realities
  • Making a Better World

Employment Opportunities

Blackbird Security is proud of our standing as an equal-opportunities, non-discriminatory employer. Currently, approximately 5% of our workforce identifies as an Indigenous person and we are committed to seeing this number increase in the coming months and years.

Community Involvement

We believe it’s our responsibility to actively contribute to the communities we work in. As a result, we strive to provide employees with opportunities to get involved. In addition to supporting rural Indigenous communities through the Breakfast Club of Canada, we are always on the look out for further ways to support local Indigenous events and initiatives and to spread awareness through our social media platforms. If you know of any great causes we can support, let us know!
