Security and Team Trust

There’s always a bit of a shift that occurs when the holidays finish and everyone returns back to work. The excitement and general fun of the holidays dissipate and the winter seems to have suddenly set in for the long haul. It’s important to take the time to focus on boosting staff morale, keeping spirits high and sticking to your resolutions. While a lot of people make personal resolutions in the new year, it’s a good idea to make some business or team resolutions as well.  At Blackbird Security, our aim is to always be improving. January is a good time to pause, reflect and make adjustments to ensure an even better year than the previous.

When it comes to security and safety practices within your business, it’s important to set standards and goals, but it’s equally important to have the trust and support of your entire team. Good security practices are only effective if staff are on board, in the loop and willing to implement procedures. Consider what you can improve on, set some goals for 2019 and be sure to get your entire team on board. Here are some things to consider when it comes to updating and improving security practices within your company:

Acknowledge Small Failures

Honesty is a very important factor when it comes to both resolutions and building trust within your staff team. Consider the past few years, where could you have done better? Was there a grand idea that you bravely attempted, but didn’t quite land where you wanted it to? Did you have plans for better safety procedures or loss prevention measures, but just didn’t make the time to implement your plans? Be honest about these things. Failures are a very necessary part of learning and growing. Take the losses as opportunities, and decide how you will do better in the year to come. Be up front with your team, let them know where things have fallen short and involve them in your plans to improve.

Ask for Advice

No one knows the day to day operations of your business as well as your frontline staff. Check in with your team and seek their advice! Ask your team what they experience or see that could be improved upon. They may have some great suggestions on how to keep your store, property or company more secure. Asking your staff about their experience and ideas also demonstrates that you value their opinion, trust their judgement and want them to feel that they can approach you with future challenges or ideas. A team that feels valued and trusted will always outperform one that doesn’t!

Set Clear Goals

Having clear and specific goals is important for a number of reasons. It helps to manage and track the actual progress that’s being made, and it also helps with communicating. Being transparent and clearly communicating goals with your staff team will contribute to the success of the plans that you wish to implement. Having a clear understanding of what the goals are and why they are being prioritized will help staff to feel involved, empowered and able to take on more responsibility. Create goals that are measurable, attainable and bound to time frames. Set timelines and check in on your progress. Or, better yet, invite your staff to keep track of progress as well!

Success happens as a team. It’s difficult to improve substantially or optimize operations when only part of the team is on board. Make the time in 2019 to really show your team that they are trusted and valued, ask about their experiences and set goals to improve the security of your business this year.
