Winnipeg is a city with a rich historical background and a vibrant, diverse community. It’s a multicultural city home to many festivals, major sporting events, and major retailers. At Blackbird Security, we take pride in safeguarding Winnipeg’s community, from providing security at the Millennium Library to launching a new bursary program to support Indigenous security guards. In this blog, we’ll explore the sites where Blackbird security guards are stationed in Winnipeg and how we protect community members.
An Overview of Winnipeg
Winnipeg is a vibrant city with a growing population and bustling economy. As the capital of Manitoba, it is home to over 900,000 residents and has experienced significant growth post-COVID. However, with its 4th highest crime rate in Canada, there is a growing need for robust security services to safeguard the city's diverse communities and businesses.
Protecting Winnipeg’s Businesses
In Winnipeg, Blackbird Security is dedicated to protecting prominent retail brands such as Best Buy, Canadian Tire, Dollarama, Giant Tiger, and Safeway with retail security services. Our highly trained uniformed security guards provide surveillance and immediate response to any security threats, ensuring a safe shopping environment for customers and a secure working atmosphere for staff.
Our retail security guards effectively deter theft and other crimes through measures including patrols, incident response, and loss prevention techniques. Our tailored security strategies are designed to meet the unique needs of each retail location, providing peace of mind and maintaining the integrity of these esteemed establishments. Blackbird Security guards additionally receive customer service training, enabling them to facilitate positive interactions with every store guest.
Protecting Winnipeg’s Community Associations
Alongside our work with Winnipeg's retail businesses, we actively protect the city's community associations. We provide uniformed security guard services to The Salvation Army Weetamah, supporting social services staff in maintaining a safe community center. Additionally, we provide residential security guard services to Holy Family Home, a long-term care facility, ensuring a secure environment for residents and staff.
Blackbird Security Protects The Winnipeg Millennium Library
The Millennium Library is Winnipeg’s largest public library, serving approximately 5,000 visitors daily and spanning 17,600 square metres of space. As a hub of community activity, the library requires all-day coverage from 6:30 AM to 12:30 AM with over 12 uniformed security guards. This creates a safe environment for library visitors and the community, providing a friendly atmosphere for guests to read and learn.
In addition to standard security licensing training, Blackbird Security guards receive comprehensive safety and security training through Blackbird Academy, our in-house training program for security guards. Through Blackbird Academy, our guards learn key skills including verbal de-escalation training, crisis prevention training, emergency response, and standard first aid. These skills are key to providing a safe environment within the communities we protect.
Uplifting Winnipeg’s Indigenous Community
We’re proud to employ 50% Indigenous security guards through our coverage of the Winnipeg Millenium Library. This reflects our team’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and creates opportunities within the Winnipeg community.
To support this goal, we established the Blackbird Security Indigenous Bursary Program in Manitoba. Following the success of our similar initiative in BC in 2021, this program aims to support Indigenous individuals in pursuing the mandatory security guard training program, provided by the approved training provider Security Guard Course (SGC). The Blackbird Security Indigenous Bursary Program is designed to uplift and prioritize Indigenous Rights holders by offering financial aid, especially to those facing economic challenges. Annually, the program will provide up to 12 bursaries, covering the full cost of the online training course at SGC.
Blackbird Security is dedicated to supporting the Indigenous community in Winnipeg and across Canada. Recently, we proudly donated our security services for a Circles for Reconciliation event in Winnipeg. This community initiative focuses on fostering reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples through dialogue and understanding. Ensuring the event ran smoothly was our privilege, as we deeply value and are committed to supporting these vital initiatives.
