Blackbird Security Partners with the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction

Local governments play a vital and underappreciated role in our lives. They provide the roads we drive on, the hospitals we depend on, and even the water we drink. As part of our security work, we are proud to partner with governments and municipalities across Western Canada to provide premium security solutions that work to ensure the safety of the public, while being respectful of public sector budgets.

Recently, Blackbird Security was awarded the security contract for the BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. Our team provides a security presence at offices in Campbell River, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Duncan, Nanaimo and Victoria. In this week’s blog, we wanted to detail our approach to civic security, and the unique training our security guards receive before being assigned to these roles.

Trained to Protect You

The role of a security guard has significantly changed in 2020. Not only do our team members perform their usual security tasks, they also handle the safe flow of visitors in and out of the building, while also adhering to social distancing guidelines and capacity numbers. To keep up with the times, security businesses must adapt their training methods to match the reality on the ground. Anxieties are running high in our communities due to the pandemic, and open communication is our way of preventing flashpoints.

As a security business, we believe the role of our security guards is to de-escalate difficult situations and ensure everyone under our care is safe. We’ve learned dialogue is key to this effort, and the right words can help resolve situations without any aggression or physical force.

During their day-to-day roles, our security guards interact with a diverse range of individuals from every walk of life. It’s not enough to train them in security basics and send them out into the world. Instead, we utilize a multifaceted training method to keep with the times.

Our staff undergo a mix of classroom instructional and site-specific training. During this time, they receive St. Johns Mental Health First Aid training, conflict resolution and de-escalation training, trauma informed education, OFA-1 First Aid training, and cultural / social sensitivity training.

This approach gives our team members the confidence to know they’re trained to handle almost any scenario. We hope it gives you the confidence to choose Blackbird Security for your security needs.
