Small businesses are essential to our local economy. They add colour to our communities, well-paying jobs, and vital services. That’s why Blackbird Security is proud to announce our new partnership with the Commercial Drive Business Society in Vancouver.

The Drive is one of Vancouver’s most historic neighbourhoods, stretching from the bustling transit hub of Broadway/Commercial, north through Little Italy towards Strathcona. It’s a perfect microcosm of Vancouver, with a diverse demographic of residents and patrons who pass through each day.

Providing Essential Protection for Local Businesses

Our Commercial Drive security guard team consists of Byron Scott, Dion Zabicki, Aman Kaur and Cherian Paul. Though they only recently started their vital work on the Drive, they have already received stellar feedback from the local businesses they support.

These highly trained tactical security guards will carry out regular foot patrols on Commercial Drive with a goal of ensuring local businesses are safe and secure.

In their day-to-day roles, our security guards provide the perfect example of the type of services provided by Blackbird Security. Their daily duties include:

•   Providing friendly customer service to residents and patrons alike
•   Acting as a strong visual deterrent to criminal activity
•   Working with City Bylaw Officers and VPD to ensure compliance with bylaws
•   De-escalating and resolving conflicts
•   Ensuring the safety and security of businesses and individuals
•   Providing First Aid or CPR to anyone in need

Best in Class Security Training

In the last few years, the role of security guards in our community has evolved to meet the changing times. It’s no longer enough for security guards to just receive security training. Instead, a more well-rounded approach delivers the level of service our clients expect.

Each of the guards assigned to Commercial Drive undergoes Blackbird Security’s rigorous security training program. On the health and safety side, they possess Occupational First Aid (OFA) certification and Naloxone administration training. They also undergo St. John’s Mental Health Training. Trauma Informed Training and the Indigenous Awareness Training 201 offered by Indigenous Awareness Canada.

The whole team also undergoes customer service, incident de-escalation and conflict resolution training through our in-house Blackbird Security Academy courses. This wide-ranging level of knowledge equips our team to compassionately deal with individuals suffering from mental health and addiction issues in a respectful and de-escalatory manner.
