We’re extremely proud to announce our new long-term, working partnership with Fishing Lake First Nation Ventures, an economic development arm of Fishing Lake First Nation, an Anishnabe Nation located in Treaty 4 territory in Saskatchewan. Together, we’re working to create career opportunities in security for Fishing Lake First Nation members while growing our roster of excellent security guards across Canada.

About Fishing Lake First Nation
Fishing Lake First Nation is a Saulteaux Ojibway community with roots in the Treaty 4 territory of Saskatchewan. The Saulteaux peoples are a branch of the Ojibway Nations, who refer to themselves as Anishnabe, meaning “original people.” Fishing Lake First Nation has a proud history of leadership and resilience, and today operates a range of programs focused on economic development, education, housing, health, and cultural preservation for its members both on and off reserve.
About Fishing Lake First Nation Ventures
Fishing Lake First Nation Ventures is the economic development arm of Fishing Lake First Nation, owned and operated by the Nation itself. The organization focuses on building opportunities that benefit the community today while creating generational wealth for the future.
As FLFN Ventures describes their mission, "Every project, business, and decision is guided by the goal of empowering our people, supporting families, and contributing to a strong, self-sustaining future."
FLFN Ventures supports community members and families through job creation, local investment, and business partnerships that reflect the Nation’s vision and values.
Our working partnership with FLFN Ventures is built on our shared commitment to long-term opportunity, community growth, and reconciliation in action. Together, we’re committed to building a relationship that creates opportunities, built on the understanding that sustainable growth comes from investing in people first.
What Our Partnership With FLFN Ventures Includes
This working partnership is designed to create pathways into the security industry for members of Fishing Lake First Nation. Through our collaboration, Blackbird Security will:
- Provide dedicated mentorship and professional security training to community members entering the industry.
- Support community career fairs and employment outreach initiatives.
- Establish a bursary program and fund security licensing for members pursuing long-term careers in security.
These commitments reflect the same approach we take with our broader Indigenous community initiatives, including our longstanding Indigenous Bursary Program in partnership with the Justice Institute of British Columbia, and our annual donation of event security services to Circles for Reconciliation in Winnipeg.

How This Partnership Can Positively Impact Fishing Lake First Nations Community Members
The security industry offers a stable career, opportunities for growth, and the chance to provide meaningful work within the community. Removing the financial and logistical barriers that often stand between community members and those opportunities is at the core of this partnership.
Careers in Security Open Opportunities
A career in security provides a foundation for professional development in communication, crisis management, de-escalation, emergency response, and leadership. These skills are fundamental in security and can be transferred to other industries. At Blackbird Security, we prioritize investing in our guards by providing advanced training in key areas, including:
- Peaceful de-escalation
- First aid
- Fire safety
- Crisis intervention
- Customer service and communication
- Report writing
- Introduction to Canadian criminal law
A career in security can serve as a stepping stone for other careers, thanks to the skills learned on the job. Former Blackbird Security guards have gone on to careers in law enforcement, building on the training and experience they gained with our team.
Building Long-Term Opportunity for Fishing Lake First Nation Members
Through funding security licensing, providing mentorship, and directly connecting community members with employment opportunities, this partnership seeks to close access gaps. Fishing Lake First Nation members who join Blackbird Security become part of a growing national team, with opportunities to work across Canada in a range of environments, including retail, residential, commercial, and event security.
Blackbird Security’s Commitment to Indigenous Communities In Canada
This partnership is the latest in a series of long-term commitments Blackbird Security has made to Indigenous communities in Canada. Our initiatives to support Indigenous communities include:
- Our Indigenous Bursary Program, in partnership with the Justice Institute of British Columbia, has helped fund Basic Security Training for Indigenous students facing financial barriers to entry since 2021.
- Our annual donation of event security services to Circles for Reconciliation in Winnipeg, an organization that brings Indigenous and non-Indigenous people together in respectful dialogue on National Indigenous Peoples Day in June.
- Our security team at the Winnipeg Millennium Library is 50% Indigenous, reflecting our commitment to creating meaningful employment opportunities within Winnipeg’s Indigenous community.
Reconciliation is important to us, and we believe that the best way to achieve it is through the concrete actions we take as an employer and Canadian security provider.
Reconciliation in Action
At Blackbird Security, we’re proud to put reconciliation into action through partnerships like the one we created with Fishing Lake First Nations Ventures. Concrete commitments through employment, training, mentorship, and investment are the best ways to create lasting change within communities and set community members up for success.
