Bruno Mars brought his worldwide phenomenon, The Romantic Tour, to BC Place for five shows from October 14th to 21st, and Blackbird Security had the proud honour of securing each one. The Romantic Tour broke the BC Place record for the most shows held by one artist on a single tour, with all five dates selling out.

To safeguard the fans, crew, and performers (including RAYE, Anderson .Paak, and of course, Bruno Mars himself), 500 Blackbird Security guards were on duty each night of the tour. This was the biggest event at BC Place since the FIFA World Cup earlier this year, which Blackbird Security also secured.

This blog will cover how our event security guards protected the performances and the venue, from entrance security to exit after the encore.

‍

Key Takeaways

Bruno Mars Brings the 24K Magic to BC Place

Bruno Mars played five shows at BC Place on October 14, 16, 17, 20, and 21, setting a BC Place record for the most shows hosted by one artist on a single tour. Taylor Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour and The Jackson 5's 1984 tour previously shared the record with three shows.

We’re proud of the Blackbird Security team for keeping all five sold-out shows safe and protecting the 200,000+ fans who attended. In the next sections, we’ll cover exactly what went into each unforgettable night.

‍

Count on Me: An Event Security Team Fans Could Trust

On each night of the show, our event security team included:

  • Approximately 500 security guards.
  • 30+ managers and supervisors.

Across five nights, that was about 2,500 guard shifts. Behind the scenes, a great deal of coordination went into making sure the teams were set up for success.

“Staffing 500 guards a night for five straight shows takes a lot of planning. Every guard needs to know their area, the venue’s policies, and who they report to before the gates open. At a venue as big as BC Place, preparation is what makes the difference when 50,000 guests arrive.” – Alex Van Ryk, National Director of Operations at Blackbird Security

‍

Behind the Scenes Finesse

When guarding events of this size and scale, a solid chain of command is the key to keeping everything moving as smoothly as possible. The team was organized into layers, including:

  • Managers, who oversaw the operation and coordinated with BC Place and event staff.
  • Supervisors, who directed teams assigned to specific areas, including gates, concourses, and the concert floor.
  • Event security guards, who handled pre-entry screening, crowd management, and provided support for attendees in their assigned areas.

This chain of command helped ensure communication reached all levels of guards quickly, so any issue could be escalated and resolved without delay.

Our managers worked closely with BC Place staff before and during each show, coordinating on policy, entry, crowd flow, and any changes or incidents that came up. This close partnership helped our guards support venue staff seamlessly.

‍

Leave the Door Open? Only After Pre-Entry Security

Entry is one of the busiest times of the night for any event, but at BC Place, entry can be even more demanding. With a capacity of over 50,000, BC Place saw thousands of fans arrive at once when gates opened at 5PM.

BC Place staff scanned tickets before guiding attendees through metal detectors at the door, while Blackbird Security guards worked alongside them. Pre-entry security included:

  • Directing crowds to their correct gates and managing lineups.
  • Enforcing BC Place’s bag policy (small bags and clear bags only).
  • Scanning for prohibited items and confiscating them from attendees.
  • Keeping lines flowing efficiently and safely.

A smooth entry process sets the tone for the entire night. Read more about why crowd control is important in our previous blog, How Security Guards Control Crowds.

Versace on the (Dance) Floor: Keeping Fans Safe During the Show

Once the show starts, the focus moves from entrance and concourse security to safety inside the stadium, especially in the floor section. During the show, guards:

  • Monitored crowd density on the floor and at barriers.
  • Assisted attendees in distress, answered questions, and responded to concerns.
  • Responded to medical incidents and worked with first aid teams.
  • Monitored crowds in every section for aggressive, unsafe, or disruptive behaviour, addressing incidents professionally with an emphasis on de-escalation.
  • Kept crowds out of aisles, away from structures on the floor, and clear of the lighting booth and other restricted areas.

With guards stationed throughout the floor and stands, fans were free to sing and dance along while our team kept a close eye on their safety.

‍

Too Good to Say Goodbye: Managing Egress After the Encore

After the performance, tens of thousands of fans head to the exits at the same time. This makes a smooth egress process extremely important. During exit time at BC Place, crowds were funnelled down ramps directly to the nearest exits, with the rest of the concourse blocked off.

Our event security guards helped keep this process as smooth as possible by:

  • Directing fans to the nearest exits.
  • Managing crowd flow from sections to the concourse and exits.
  • Monitoring crowds for distress and answering attendee questions and concerns.

Thanks to thorough organization, clear exit paths, and well-positioned guards, fans left BC Place safely each night.

Blackbird Security has been immensely proud to support some of BC Place’s biggest events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, which saw 850 to 950 guards on duty per match.

Our experience safeguarding large-scale events carries over from one to the next. We’re always striving to improve our processes, and every event gives our managers, supervisors, and guards new takeaways that help us make each event even better than the last.

How do I measure the effectiveness of security measures?
Measuring the effectiveness of security measures involves tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate how well systems and personnel are meeting safety and asset protection goals. Start by analyzing incident response times, reductions in theft, vandalism, or shrinkage, and overall resolution rates for reported issues. Comparing pre- and post-implementation data helps demonstrate tangible improvements in safety and loss prevention. Regular audits, surveys, and risk assessment reports can also gauge the reliability and perception of security measures.

Key KPIs to track include:
- Incident response times: Faster responses to alarms or emergencies.
- Reduction in theft/vandalism: Compare loss data before and after implementation.
- Patrol compliance: Track patrol frequency and adherence via GPS or logs.
- False alarm rates: Lower rates ensure focus on real threats.
- Client/Employee satisfaction: Gather feedback to measure confidence in security.
- Client services: Dedicated account representative who supports ongoing needs & can adjust strategy as needed
