Blackbird Security Supports: Manitoba Indigenous Bursary

Winnipeg has a rich historical background and a vibrant, diverse community of over 900,000 residents. At Blackbird Security, we take pride in safeguarding Winnipeg’s businesses and organizations while uplifting the city’s Indigenous community. In this blog, we’ll detail our efforts to provide opportunities to Indigenous community members of Winnipeg through our Indigenous Bursary Program.

Blackbird Security provides security services in Manitoba

The Blackbird Security Indigenous Bursary Program in Manitoba

Following the success of our BC Indigenous Bursary in 2021, our Manitoba program aims to support prospective Indigenous security guards in their mandatory security guard training program studies, provided by the approved training provider Security Guard Course (SGC).

The Blackbird Security Manitoba Indigenous Bursary is designed to uplift and prioritize Indigenous Rights holders by offering financial aid, especially to those facing economic challenges. Annually, the program provides up to 12 bursaries, covering the full cost of the training course at SGC.

Encouraging Indigenous Community Members to Enter The Security Industry

A career in security is a highly rewarding one, offering opportunities for personal growth while giving back to the community. In addition to providing a valuable career path within the security field, security guards can utilize their skills learned in the field to become police officers across Canada. In our previous blog, we interviewed a former Blackbird Security Loss Prevention Operative (LPO), Shayde Russell, about his journey from security to policing, and how his experience with Blackbird Security laid the foundation for his current role as an RCMP officer.

We encourage Indigenous Manitobans to get involved in the security industry through regional job listings posted on our Indeed page. If you’re an Indigenous person living in Manitoba and wish to apply for our bursary, please reach out to us at jobs@blackbirdsecurity.ca to be considered for our Indigenous track. Opportunities for Winnipeg’s Indigenous Community: Winnipeg Millenium Library

Blackbird Security is proud to employ a security team comprised of 50% Indigenous security guards through our coverage of the Winnipeg Millenium Library. This initiative reflects our team’s commitment to diversity and inclusion while creating opportunities within the Winnipeg Indigenous community.

The Millennium Library is Winnipeg's largest public library, welcoming around 5,000 visitors each day and covering 17,600 square meters. As a hub of community activity, it requires continuous security coverage from 6:30 AM to 12:30 AM, with more than 12 uniformed security guards on duty. This provides a safe and welcoming space for visitors to enjoy reading, learning, and participating in their community.

Supporting Winnipeg’s Indigenous Community: Circles for Reconciliation

Blackbird Security is committed to supporting the Indigenous community in Winnipeg and throughout Canada. Earlier this year, we were honoured to provide our security services for a Circles for Reconciliation event in Winnipeg. This initiative promotes reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples through meaningful dialogue and understanding. It was a privilege to help contribute to the event's success.

Along with the Millenium Library, we protect several prominent retail brands in Manitoba, including Best Buy, Canadian Tire, Dollarama, Giant Tiger, and Safeway, plus uniformed security guard services to community organizations like The Salvation Army Weetamah, and residential security for Holy Family Home.
